Director James Cameron has once again proven his mastery of blockbuster filmmaking as “Avatar: Fire and Ash” launched to approximately $345 million in worldwide ticket sales during its debut weekend. The third film in the Avatar franchise from Walt Disney met analyst expectations, confirming the series maintains substantial audience appeal more than 15 years after the original’s release.

The film earned distinction as 2025’s second-most-successful Hollywood opening, surpassed only by the animated feature “Zootopia 2,” which generated $556 million when it premiered in November. Domestically, “Fire and Ash” seized the top position at box offices across the United States and Canada, where it collected $88 million of its global total, according to figures released by Disney.

“Fire and Ash” continues exploring the world of Pandora through the experiences of its Na’vi inhabitants, the imposing blue-skinned beings whose civilization occupies the lush alien moon. The opening weekend performance, while strong, represents a 35% decline from the domestic launch of 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the sequel that arrived over a decade after the original film revolutionized cinema with its stunning visual innovations.

Market analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations Co. contextualized the numbers, explaining that audiences approached this installment without the intense anticipation that characterized the sequel’s release after such a prolonged absence. However, Bock emphasized the positive aspects, describing the opening as an excellent start to the holiday movie season. He anticipates substantial box office activity over the coming weeks as the Christmas and New Year’s holidays traditionally drive increased theater attendance.

The exhibition industry is hoping “Fire and Ash” will stimulate a resurgence in moviegoing habits that extends throughout the next year. Comscore statistics indicate year-to-date ticket sales running just 1.3% above 2024 levels but remaining 22.5% below the pre-pandemic standard set in 2019. Theater chains express optimism about their 2026 schedule, which includes highly anticipated releases such as Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” “Dune: Part Three,” and “Avengers: Doomsday.” Cameron’s Avatar films have consistently demonstrated unusual longevity at the box office, continuing to generate revenue well beyond typical theatrical runs. With Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington providing voices for Na’vi parents engaged in defending their family and planet, and considering that the first Avatar accumulated $2.9 billion while “The Way of Water” earned $2.3 billion, the franchise appears positioned for continued success despite Cameron’s acknowledgment that these productions require enormous returns to justify future installments scheduled for 2029 and 2031.
