The catalyst for this diplomatic flurry is President Trump’s declaration that he will impose tariffs on European countries to facilitate the US purchase of Greenland. EU Presidents von der Leyen and Costa issued a joint condemnation, stating that such measures risk a “downward spiral” in relations. They asserted that Europe’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation through economic threats.
The proposed economic penalties are substantial and immediate. Effective February 1, a 10% tariff is set to apply to goods from major economies like the UK, Germany, France, and Finland.
