The United States has moved to counter China’s persistent “grey zone” warfare tactics against Taiwan by confirming the sale of the $700 million NASAMS air defense system. This advanced weaponry, which has been battle-tested extensively in Ukraine, is designed to identify, engage, and destroy the types of aerial threats that China deploys on a near-daily basis around the island. The sale represents a critical modernization of Taiwan’s defensive umbrella, providing a medium-range solution to complement its existing high-altitude and short-range systems.

The Pentagon’s announcement details a firm timeline, with the production of these units by RTX expected to be completed by February 2031. This long-term investment is backed by fiscal 2026 funds, signaling that US support is structurally embedded in its future budget planning. This package brings the total US arms sales to Taiwan for the week to $1 billion, following a separate approval for $330 million in aircraft parts. These sales are essential for maintaining the operational readiness of Taiwan’s air force, which is frequently scrambled to intercept Chinese incursions.

The security context in the region is becoming increasingly fraught. Recent days have seen Chinese coast guard ships entering waters controlled by Japan and drones flying between Taiwan and Japan’s Yonaguni island. These maneuvers are part of a broader strategy by Beijing to challenge the status quo without sparking an open conflict. In response, the US is ensuring that its partners, including Taiwan (and by extension Japan and Australia), are equipped with interoperable and effective defense systems. Currently, only Australia and Indonesia operate the NASAMS in the Indo-Pacific, making Taiwan a key new node in this regional security architecture.

US officials have been vocal about the intent behind these sales. Raymond Greene, the senior US diplomat in Taipei, declared that American commitments to the island are “rock solid.” Speaking to business leaders, he emphasized that the US is focused on helping Taiwan achieve “peace through strength.” This philosophy posits that the only way to prevent war in the Taiwan Strait is to make the cost of aggression unacceptably high for China.

Taiwan’s government is aligned with this approach. Defense Minister Wellington Koo has explicitly called on China to “abandon its thinking of using force,” arguing that disputes should be resolved through dialogue. However, with the PLA constantly testing Taiwan’s responses, the acquisition of the NASAMS provides the island with a necessary shield. Along with indigenous programs like domestic submarine construction, this new missile system ensures that Taiwan can better protect its vital supply lines and population centers from the growing threat of aerial coercion.
