Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare strategy that eliminates free overhead cabin baggage for its lowest-priced tickets on short and medium-haul flights. Currently, passengers holding an Economy Light fare are allowed to bring both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, with the introduction of the Economy Basic fare, only a small personal item that can fit under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack, will be included.
Travelers who wish to carry a larger cabin suitcase will need to opt for a higher fare category or pay an additional fee. This revised fare structure will undergo a trial phase starting April 28, applying to flights departing from May 19 on selected routes. If deemed successful, the new pricing will be expanded across Brussels Airlines’ European network.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. While airlines claim that this change offers more flexibility and allows lighter travelers to benefit from lower fares, those who frequently travel with additional cabin luggage might not notice significant savings once baggage fees are factored in.
The new policy is likely to affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who often rely on cabin baggage to sidestep checked luggage charges and avoid airport delays. Passengers are advised to closely examine fare conditions before making a booking and consider the total travel cost, including potential baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the initial ticket price.
For those traveling with only a personal item, the new fare could indeed provide savings. However, for many other travelers, the most economical ticket might no longer equate to the lowest overall travel cost.
