In response to a surge in Russian drone activity, Moldova and Romania are intensifying their defense collaboration with Ukraine, focusing on developing domestic drone technology to counter aerial threats. This move comes after at least five Russian drones breached Moldovan airspace on August 27, coinciding with Moldova’s National Day festivities. The event was attended by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan.
President Sandu condemned the airspace violations as an intimidation tactic by Russia, emphasizing that the conflict in Ukraine is increasingly impacting its neighbors. She stressed the necessity for enhanced regional cooperation and committed to bolstering defense investments and working closely with Moldova’s allies.
The frequency of Russian drone incursions into Moldova and Romania’s airspace has seen a marked increase in recent months. This escalation has heightened regional security concerns and underscored the urgent need for more robust air defense systems.
