Teresa Ribera has issued a stark warning about the intensifying effects of climate change in the wake of a severe heatwave sweeping across Europe. She has called for more robust action to combat climate misinformation and push forward clean energy policies. According to Ribera, the current extreme temperatures serve as a clear indication of the repercussions of neglecting the root causes of climate change. She criticized misleading arguments against climate policies, emphasizing the need for decisions to be informed by scientific evidence and the public interest.

Several European countries have been hit by record-breaking heat, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in parts of Germany, Poland, Hungary, and other regions. This has led to significant disruptions, including school closures, impacts on tourism, heightened wildfire risks, and increased strain on energy systems. Ribera highlighted these challenges as urgent reasons to accelerate efforts in addressing climate change.

Defending the European Green Deal, Ribera noted widespread public support for initiatives aimed at achieving cleaner air, secure water supplies, renewable energy, and healthier environments. She argued that reducing reliance on fossil fuels is essential for enhancing Europe’s long-term economic security. Ribera underscored the importance of continuing the momentum toward renewable energy growth in Europe, warning that any delay in climate efforts could amplify future risks.

Ribera also pointed out the necessity for emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to consider their impacts on energy consumption and water resources. Her remarks underline the importance of integrating sustainable practices across various sectors to mitigate the impacts of climate change effectively.
