Europe’s agricultural sector faces significant challenges as a record-breaking heatwave in June has led to an estimated €2 billion in crop losses and a reduction in grain production by approximately 9 million tonnes. This development poses serious concerns regarding food prices and the security of the region’s food supply.
Industry estimates indicate that the heatwave has particularly affected major crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and oats, resulting in the smallest grain harvest across the European Union and the United Kingdom since 2018. The intense temperatures during critical growth stages severely impacted maize, especially during pollination, and wheat during grain development, causing substantial yield reductions across several predominant farming areas.
France is anticipated to experience the most significant losses, with a decline in maize production by about 3.4 million tonnes, followed by notable reductions in Hungary and Spain. Across Europe, farmers report considerable damage to their crops, with some predicting yield decreases of 50% to 70% due to the sustained high temperatures and drought conditions.
In the United Kingdom, extended dry periods during the spring and early summer have similarly disrupted crop development. Farmers have had to resort to harvesting sooner than usual and have increased irrigation efforts to safeguard fruit, vegetable, and livestock production.
The diminished harvest is likely to lead to greater dependence on grain imports in Europe, potentially driving up global grain and food prices. Market analysts caution that similar weather-related challenges in other key agricultural regions, including drought-affected areas in the United States, could further exacerbate the tightening of global food supplies.
