Bulgaria has witnessed a notable increase in its exports during the first five months of 2026, with figures reaching €18.8 billion. This marks a 7.4% rise compared to the same timeframe in the previous year, as revealed by preliminary official data. However, imports surged at an even quicker rate, climbing 12.8% year-on-year to €24.2 billion from January to May.

Focusing on the month of May alone, exports rose by 7.8%, totaling €3.72 billion. In the same period, imports experienced a significant jump of 17.4%, amounting to €4.68 billion. This substantial increase in imports compared to exports has contributed to the country’s trade dynamics during this period.

The heightened import activity has resulted in Bulgaria facing a trade deficit of €5.4 billion over the five-month span. This trend extends into May, where the trade balance continued to show a negative figure, with a deficit of €957.9 million. The data underscores the stronger growth in imports relative to exports, affecting the nation’s trade balance.

These developments highlight Bulgaria’s ongoing economic activities and their impact on the trade landscape. As imports continue to outpace exports, the trade deficit remains a focal point for the country’s economic analysis. The figures serve as an important indicator of Bulgaria’s economic performance and its position in international trade during the early part of 2026.
